"You Make it Possible" Program
Special Events/Fundraising
Public Education Program

All volunteers must attend a volunteer orientation before beginning to volunteer at the shelter/agency.  Certain special events volunteers, whose involvement with the agency is time-limited and specific, are exempt from this requirement.

“You Make it Possible” Program
Volunteers who sign up for this type of volunteering are asked to commit to a 2 hour shift per week for at least 3 consecutive months.

This volunteer program provides support to all agency programs on an as-needed basis.  Volunteers in this program may run movie nights for kids in the shelter; organize craft activities or indoor/outdoor games and/or provide childcare for women’s groups or appointments; planning birthday and/or Christmas party. Volunteers may be asked to re-file books in the library or catalogue new resources; sort donations; organize, sort & maintain the attic; purchase groceries; type or photocopy; light house cleaning; stuff envelopes or run errands.  Volunteers in this program may also provide childcare for women attending appointments in the agency, drive women to appointments in the agency van.  These volunteers might also take pets to animal shelters, cook with women in the shelter to use up big donations of perishable food items and/or, where their skill & comfort level allows, work on resumes, financial planning etc with women. While not the most glamorous of roles, it is essential to promoting client service as it allows trained staff to attend to women & their children.

Prerequisite:  Volunteer orientation and meeting with Volunteer Coordinator; additional training depending on tasks.

Special Events/Fundraising
These volunteers assist at BBQs and other special events.  This program is an opportunity for people who have a busy schedule and are unable to make a regular commitment.  Most of these shifts will fall on weekends.

a.  Special Events Volunteers
Volunteers should be able to work a 4-hour shift at an event.  No prerequisites.

b.  Event Committees
Volunteers are needed to organize and coordinate the following events along with the Development Committee and the Board.
Daisy of Hope                                 IQ Challenge
Barbecues                                      Christmas Family Sponsorship
AGM/Open House

Prerequisite: Volunteer orientation.  Meetings may be required.

Public Education Program
Volunteers in this program will be asked to help out with presentations to schools and community groups.  Sometimes this will involve being present with the agency education board to answer questions; other times it will involve delivering short presentations to groups.  It may also involve co-presenting with a staff member or other community members.  This group would also support advocacy efforts such as drafting letters to politicians that might be included in the agency’s thank you letters or posted on our website.  In addition, a subgroup of these volunteers would support
the presentation of the Dec 6th Candlelight Vigil.

Prerequisite: Volunteer orientation.  Additional training will be provided and staff will accompany volunteers for their first few presentations.
