Children's counselling

Children are affected by what they witness in their home; they learn what they live. Many parents think their kids are not aware of the conflict between them, but children are incredibly perceptive. Given an opportunity to speak with someone about the hurting in their home, kids see the children’s room as a safe space to talk about their feelings.

The Children's Program supports children and mothers because the best way to help kids is to help their primary caregivers. Counsellors strengthen child-parent attachments, and promote children's innate ability to protect themselves. Moms and kids in shelter or in the community who have been affected by abuse can access this service.

WRRC is grateful for the support of the United Way in its funding of the Children's Program.

Moms:

• learn how to talk to their kids about abuse

• learn the effects on kids of witnessing abuse

• learn how to keep their children safe

• learn about healthy child development

• strengthen their parenting skills

• can attend a group program to learn about the effects of abuse on kids

Kids:

• learn to express their feelings through play, art, talk or games

• learn about abuse and its effects

• learn how to be safe

• learn about 'ok touch' and 'not ok touch'

• can attend a group program to learn about abuse and that they are not alone
