Philosophy

Consistent with our mission, vision and values, we operate all of our programs from a woman-centred perspective.   We seek regular and ongoing feedback from our clients/residents and use that information to make changes in how we do things.   Safety is our first priority: choice and empowerment are our second.

We define woman abuse as the intentional and systemic use of tactics of power and control to gain control over the thoughts, beliefs and conduct of a woman by inducing fear and dependence; a pattern of coercive behaviour.

We believe that woman abuse does not happen in a vacuum: it exists because our culture facilitates it.

We see the existence of woman abuse as a societal issue and abused women as experiencing the inevitable outcomes of our culture - not as a sign that there is something wrong with these individual women.

It is our responsibility to achieve our vision through individual and collective acts of advocacy & social change that challenge our culture.
