Helping women and children build a new life for themselves from the inside out is a big undertaking. Without the valuable contribution of volunteers, we couldn't do it.
Often individuals feel helpless in the face of abuse, not knowing what they can do to address such a pervasive and difficult issue, but by volunteering for WRRC, they can make a difference.
Here are some ways to help:
• hold a garage sale, bake sale, car wash or other event to raise funds (see the Ways to give section of this site for more info)
• offer a workshop for the clients in an area of your expertise, whether it's card-making, cake decorating, car maintenance, scrap-booking, or yoga
• provide childcare at the agency for a couple of hours to give a mother in shelter or in the community some respite
• learn about abuse and become a community educator
• drive women to appointments in London or in the community
• become a peer mentor
Perhaps the most vital contribution you can make to help end abuse is to learn how society perpetuates it. Become a role model and teach others how the words we use and the assumptions we make contribute to the abuse of women in our society. (See the Education and awareness section of this site to begin the learning process).
