IQ CHALLENGE - Trivia for the Fun of it!
(March 1st, 2008)

The WRRC’s IQ Challenge is a fun'raising event held annually in March, organized by a committee of volunteers. The event is a night of trivia made up of eight rounds with each round having ten questions.  Participants are teams of eight people who register for the event but people are always welcome to come the night of the event to make up teams or to be a spectator.  A blind auction and a silent action round out the night's festivities.  Click here for more information on this event.  To register, click here for the IQ Challenge Registration Form.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
(March 8th)

Every year on March 8, millions of women and men around the world celebrate International Women’s Day.  This day is an opportunity to reflect on the progress made to advance women’s equality, to assess the challenges facing women in contemporary society and to consider future steps to enhance women’s quality of life and, to celebrate the gains made.

In 2005 International Women’s Day was celebrated by WRRC partnering with the Northwest Women's Institute   in the passing out of flowers to women in the Strathroy Caradoc Area.   Rose-a-Lea Gardens Ltd. Donated these flowers. If your organization/corporation would like to partner or support WRRC in recognizing International women’s day in our community, please contact 246-1526. WRRC has a variety of event ideas designed to fit the budget and volunteer capabilities of any size group.

DAISY OF HOPE CAMPAIGN
(Month of May)

About the Daisy of Hope...

For the forth year in a row, The Women’s Rural Resource Centre (WRRC) is participating in the province-wide Daisy of Hope campaign, which runs throughout the month of May. The campaign is designed to raise awareness about abused women and their children. There will be a number of special events planned, please check back here for a bulletin of events which will be available early April. You can also keep an eye on our What’s New page for upcoming events.

In the town of Strathroy and throughout West Middlesex County, money raised through The Daisy of Hope campaign supports the services of The Women’s Rural Resource Centre. These services include: an emergency shelter for abused women and their children, counseling services, and a free, 24-hour crisis telephone line.

About your Participation...

The WRRC is grateful that so many local businesses and schools have agreed to participate in the Daisy of Hope month. Thank you!

If you run out of Hope bracelets , please contact Jennifer Kroh, Administrative Assistant at the WRRC. Jennifer will arrange to have more supplies sent to you. Jennifer can be reached at (519) 246-1526 ext 221.  The price for the purchase of a Hope Bracelet is $3 each or 4 for $10.

The Daisy of Hope runs until May 31st. During the first week of June, a volunteer will visit your place of business to pick up any remaining supplies, and to collect any money that you have raised. If you’ve raised a significant amount of money and would like to have it picked up before June, please call us.

Thank you for your participation. Many women and children from your community will benefit from the funds raised through this campaign.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Megan Cornwell, Daisy of Hope Campaign Chair, at (519) 245-1493 (evenings) or (519) 488-2003 (during the daytime).

ANNUAL CANDLELIGHT VIGIL
(December 6th)

December 6th is Canada’s National Day of Remembrance & Action on Violence Against Women.  Each year in Strathroy, we come together as a community to “first mourn, then work for change” with a candlelight vigil (indoor) and walk (outside).

We remember and mourn by...

  • naming the Ontario women and children who have lost their lives each year to domestic violence

  • recognizing the many women living and dying in abusive relationships in our own community

  • remembering the 14 women murdered on Dec 6th 1989 in Montreal

  • bringing to our awareness the pain and anger that perpetuates violence

  • acknowledging the cultural facilitators of violence

We take action and work for change by...

  • challenging personal, societal and cultural beliefs and practices

  • acknowledging that we all play a part in perpetuating violence

  • declaring our personal commitments for action against violence

If you would like to assist in this day of remembrance by volunteering in the organization and/or presentation of our vigil please call (519) 245-1526 extention 221 or email info@wrrcsa.org.

Here are some other ways that YOU can help…
As we near the Christmas season, people often ask us how they can help meet the needs of abused women & their children served by our agency.  This list is designed to give you some ideas…

  • Support the United Way campaign…and know that you can designate the money to specifically come to the WRRC.
  • Enter a team and/or donate a gift for our IQ Challenge “Fun-Raiser” at the Caradoc Community Centre.
  • Consider becoming a sponsor for our “One Room at a Time” Campaign – It Takes a Community to spruce up the Beech Street shelter!  Call for more details: we have 2 rooms left to be sponsored.
  • Consider making a cash donation: we have to fundraise $77 000 this year to maintain our programs.   Traumatized families – especially during the holiday season – need trained, supportive counsellors available to them to help get through an overwhelming time…
  • We always need grocery vouchers (it costs over $900/month to feed 21 people! Milk for 10 children for a week as an example)
  • Shoppers Drug Mart gift certificates are helpful
  • Cleaning supplies are in demand as are paper products
  • As we will pay to bring women to shelter as well as to get women to doctor’s appointments or to another shelter should the need arise, a monetary donation towards this is appreciated as are Robert Q gift certificates.
  • Cell Phone Recycling: We accept old, used cell phones with their batteries but WITHOUT the accessories like chargers.  These can be dropped off at the WRRC anytime (we’re open 24-7!).  We send them via Fed-Ex to a company in the US who will pay $30 USD for each reusable phone and who will responsibly dispose of any phones that they can’t refurbish.  Spread the word – take up a collection and make the trip worthwhile.
  • We will also happily accept any Canadian Tire money to help us purchase supplies for the shelter or gas for our van.
  • You can also donate your Shoppers Optimum Points.  By donating some (or all) of your Shoppers Optimum Points to our organization, we would be able to purchase products and supplies we need for our ongoing services.  To donate your points please go online to www.shoppersdrugmart.ca/donate then click on the Donate Now button.
  • We can always use items for moms with infants such as cribs, strollers, baby monitors, diapers, baby food, formula, teething rings, soothers, etc.
